Desire2Learn is an online course management system that can be used to enhance your face to face classes, to teach hybrid classes, or to teach fully online distance education courses. This series of mini-courses is designed so that you can jump in at your interest level.

Prerequisites: Basic computer and Internet skills and ready access to the Internet.
Format: These instructor-led mini-courses are completely online. Each is organized around 1 week of discussion, experiences, and application assignments.
Time Commitment: 5-8 hours a week
Cost: US$25 per course to be paid to AVLN. (If you decide to cancel, you must do so by the end of the second day of the class; otherwise you will be charged the full amount.)
Certficate/PAC: 5 Hours Participation Credit per Course. A certificate will be sent as an email attachment after the course for printing.
What is required of me as a student?
You should be able to work independently and discipline yourself to complete work within the time frame given. Each week you will have assigned readings, various experiences to reflect on, and you'll discuss the readings and experiences with fellow participants.
Tracks
We've designed two tracks for the mini-courses. However, feel free to jump between them, choosing the courses that best meet your skill/knowledge level in each area.
Option 3: Active Online Teaching
If you want to focus on teaching online and get Desire2Learn training at the same time, take Active Online Teaching in October 2005 and get assistance and guidance for designing your online course with Active Online Courses in January and February 2006.

This track is for those who are new to a CMS.

Making Your Life Easier with a Course Management System
Take this introductory course to find out what a course management system is, and how it can make your life easier. Get a taste of tools that can be used to move your quizzing, course materials, and/or discussions online.

Take this course if you are already using Blackboard, WebCT, or Moodle. Assistance will be given you in converting your course(s) into Desire2Learn. Some of the main features of D2L will be highlighted. (If you are converting from another course management system, let your instructor know. We can work with you.)

Class Discussions Online

Lighten Your Course Material Through a Course Management System

Interested in manually grading fewer quizzes? Have Desire2Learn grade your quizzes for you! Come learn how to set up a quiz and how to use the Grades tool. If applicable to your subject area, also learn how to create mathematical and scientific formulas in online quizzes and content in Desire2Learn as well.

I'm Ready To Sign Up. What Do I Need to Do?
1. Make sure you meet the prerequisites:
- Do you have basic computer skills? Can you save a file and find it again?
- Are you comfortable browsing the Internet?
- Do you regularly use email with a reliable email address?
- Do you have consistent reliable Internet access throughout the duration of the course?
2. Are you sure online learning is for you? Look through this list and determine if you think online learning will work for you.
3. Do you have time for this course? Have you looked at your schedule and determined how you will get 5-8 hours in per week? The course is organized so that best participation includes an hour or two a day Monday through Friday.
